Girls who live at Sharanam Centre are nurtured and loved by staff and volunteers. Located in Dharavi, one of the largest slums in Asia and among the most populated places in the world, Sharanam shelters underprivileged girls (aged 4-16) from the streets of Mumbai. All are enrolled in school, receive medical care, and participate in recreational and extra-curricular activities. However, Sharanam resources are limited and girls lack sufficient individualized attention to build a variety of literacies. Additional support is critical to sufficiently cultivate their English language skills, digital literacy, and innovative spirits.
Many street children, especially girls, are not so fortunate and face lives of poverty, ill health, abuse, and sexual exploitation. Read more about the urgent need to protect girls in Mumbai. Sharanam Centre for Girls Statistics of Children in India
